Bio
Tara McIntosh is an emerging artist, that works between Gadigal and Biripi land, Sydney and Lake Cathie. McIntosh’s practice investigates how painting can communicate beyond language. Approaching the studio as a testing ground where surface, material, and process interact to carry memory and sensation. Each mark, layer, or trace is an imprint of experience of a place, a moment, or a bodily encounter.
McIntosh is drawn to the quiet phenomena that structure our perception: the weight of light, the subtle textures of objects, the resonance of sound and space. These impressions are held in the materials themselves; dust, pencil, incidental marks, structural lines, and the tension between gesture and absence. McIntosh’s work pushes away from a direct narrative and representation, instead offering fields of attention that invite viewers to slow down and experience the sensory, embodied traces of place and time.
Painting, for her, is both record and invention: a medium through which memory, environment, and perception intertwine. Surfaces are prepared, disrupted, and re-inscribed, creating tension between intention and contingency. This deliberate process allows meaning to emerge through duration and engagement rather than explanation, encouraging a direct, bodily experience of the work.
